In Grade 1 at the age of six in accordance to the Curriculum Guide for compulsory education. Children in pre-primary schools are also increasingly using this technology . Compulsory education covers primary and lower secondary education in Iceland.

Digital Literacy: A Separate Subject? Separate subject

It is a separate subject according to the Curriculum Guide for compulsory education from 2013 but it is also used as a technical aid in other subjects. At the upper secondary level, core subjects are Icelandic, mathematics and English. All study programmes are to require that students acquire at least the competence as defined at qualification level one for the core subjects. In addition all courses include elected fields according to the aims of the branch in question and a free selection i.e. fields of particular interest for the individual student. Upper secondary schools have a certain flexibility concerning the offer of courses for the elected fields.
